Thursday November 18, 2010 by Jenny Kwon
Preparing and going through IVF is not an easy road, with some couples needing extra care to achieve optimum results with their cycle.
Based on three Randomised Control Trials (RCT) on Acupuncture IVF, there is evidence suggesting acupuncture treatment before and after the embryo transfer can significantly improve the success of IVF compare to non Acupuncture group with significantly higher implantation rates (14.2% vs 5.9%), clinical pregnancy rates (33.6% vs 15.6%), biochemical pregnancy rates (35.3% vs 16.5%), and ongoing pregnancy rates (28.4% vs 13.8%) (Rosenthal. L, 2007).
Furthermore, Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can assist in the success of IVF by: (Liang.L, 2003)
- Improving the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs
- Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
- Increase the blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine wall
- Relax the patient and decrease their stress
- Prevent the uterus from contracting
- Lessen the side effects of drugs used by IVF
- Strengthen the immune system
- Improve semen to create better quality and quantity of embryos
- Decrease chances of miscarriage
