Top 10 Questions To Ask

Here are the 10 most important questions you should consider when selecting a health care professional. We believe the answers are important for helping you make an informed decision, and are proud to show how Back In Health Osteopathy can be your best choice.

Common Questions

  • Are you a member of your professional health body or association?

All Back In Health practitioners are members of two or more professional associations, including the Australian Osteopathic Association (AOA), Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), Chinese Medicine Registration Board of Victoria (CMRBV), Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA) or Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT). Please see our staff profiles for further details.

  • Will you treat my whole body - legs, pelvis, back, ribs, neck and head?

Osteopathy works best when treating your whole body, ensuring you have the best chance of getting relief faster and for longer. You may be missing out on a complete treatment if your practitioner only ever focuses on one local area. It’s possible there’s actually a problem with an adjacent section that doesn’t exhibit its own symptoms.

  • Do you have an in depth medical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biology?

Or do they only have localised knowledge about the body’s functions? The Osteopaths at Back In Health Osteopathy have a wealth of knowledge about how your body works and responds to treatment. Osteopaths must complete five years of comprehensive study and perform hundreds of supervised treatments before they can graduate.

  • Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral to see the Osteopaths at Back In Health Osteopathy. Simply call or use our online appointment form to make an appointment.

  • Why are you offering your first treatment for free?

The famous saying ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ almost always rings true. You may find that some practitioners advertise free initial consultations. On one hand this can be of benefit – it allows you to assess the clinic and ask the practitioner any questions you may have. However just be aware that the clinic may try and recover this cost in some other way – potentially by scheduling more treatments than is strictly necessary. This may not always be the case, but it’s something to be aware of.

  • Will you treat me on my first consultation?

Many Osteopaths don’t provide any treatment during your first consultation. This may be frustrating, especially if you are experiencing pain and need relief. The practitioner may opt to discuss their treatment philosophy or methods rather than getting straight down to business. Back In Health Osteopathy will treat you on your first Osteopathic treatment.

  • Do you want me to sign up for a treatment plan before you fully assess me?

There is flawed logic in this commitment – financially committing to a treatment plan before you have had an assessment. Some clinics may offer a bulk treatment discount, but how could they possibly know the number of consultations you will require before a thorough assessment? The answer is – they can’t. Should any clinic begin to recommend these treatment plans – think twice about proceeding with the treatment. Are they more concerned with your money or your health? Back In Health Osteopathy will be able to give you an estimate of how many treatments you need during your first consultation.

  • Does the practitioner focus on long term relief or only a short-term tuneup?

Your health should noticeably improve with treatment. You should not become reliant on treatments. Back In Health Osteopathy is focused on helping you achieve long term relief as quickly as possible. It’s better for your health and your bank account. Osteopathy recognises that everyone is different. That’s why there are numerous treatment techniques that can be used to treat a condition. One technique may be very effective on one patient, but not for you. Osteopaths at Back In Health Osteopathy are trained to recognise when something is working and when it’s not, both within your treatment and also between treatments. If our treatments are not appearing to benefit you, we will be the first people to admit this and will recommend an alternate course of action. We want you to get pain free as quickly as possible.

  • Will you focus your complete attention on me for the duration of my consultation?

Or will the practitioner admit they see multiple people at the same time, leaving and entering the room every few minutes? Are you effectively paying a full treatment fee when the practitioner sees other patients at the same time? Back In Health Osteopathy will always remain dedicated to your treatment’s appointment.

  • Will you discuss everything in simple, plain English?

Some practitioners may confuse and bamboozle you with obscure medical words. Or worse, tell you absolutely nothing. Back In Health Osteopathy is passionate about ensuring you are informed about your health. By being informed, you’re in a better position stay healthy for longer. Our Osteopaths will explain everything to you in clear, simple english, ensuring you understand.
